SULPHADOXINE AND TRIMETHOPRIM POWDER

Composition :

Sulphadoxine I.P. 10% w/w
Trimethoprim I.P. 2% w/w

Indications:

It is most effective against gram positive and gram negative bacteria. Having synergetic and
bactericidal action. Most effective in entritis, calf scours, metritis, Endometritis and retained plasenta
Potentiated sulfas sequentially inhibit enzymes inthe folic acid pathway, thereby inhibiting bacterial
thymidine synthesis. The sulfonamide blocks the conversion of para—aminobenzoic acid (PABA) to
dihydrofoiic acid (DFA) and trimethoprim blocks the conversion of DFA to tetrahydro-folic acid by
inhibiting dihydrofolate reductase. Sulfas have a fairly broad spectrum of activity. Gram positive
bacteria that are generally susceptible include most streptococci, many strains of staphylococcus and
Nocardia. Many gram negative organisms of the family Enterobacteriaceae are sus—ceptib|e to the
potentiated sulfas some protozoa (Pneumocystis carinii, Coccidia and Toxoplasma) are also inhibited
by this combination Trimethoprim / Sulphadoxine thus imposes a sequential double blockade of
bacterial metabolism. This deprives bacteria of nucleic acids and proteins essential for survival and
multiplication, and produces a high level ofantibacterial activity which is usually bactericidal.

It is indicated in the treatment of colibacillosis caused by susceptible organisms and neonatal
colibacillosis caused by susceptible E.co|i. treatment of enteritis caused by susceptible E.co|i or
salmonelia. in cattle.

Cattle : Treatment of post—weaning scours caused by susceptible E.co|i. in Pigs.Used for the treatment of respiratory, alimentary and urogenital tract infections, Mastitis, post parturient infections and abscess, dermatitis, septicemia, infections -of the ear, eye, mouth wounds and post operative prophylaxis in Cattle, Camels,
Sheep, Goats, Pigs, Horses & Dogs.
